FIVE MEN SURVIVE IN CUT OF DEBATING SQUAD

With the debate against Oxford but eight days off, Coaches B. H. Kuhns 1L., and C. H. Wheldon yesterday reduced the University squad of seven men to five, the men retained being G. E. Barton '25, H. M. Hart '26, Charlton MacVeagh '24, Philip Walker '25, and Paul Williams '25.

The squad of five men will meet twice before the next cut, once tonight and again tomorrow. The three speakers will probably be selected by the coaches after the session tomorrow evening.

All five of the men now on the squad have had considerable experience in debating while at the University. Barton was captain of the Sophomore class team last year; Hart was a member of last year's Freshman class team, and spoke against Vassar and Yale; MacVeagh is president of the University Debating Union and floor leader of the Conservative club; Walker spoke in the Yale Princeton-Harvard triangular debate in 1922 and 1923, making the University team during his Freshman year; Williams spoke against Yale last year and was a member of the triangular team in his Freshman year.

Chairman Still Unknown

The chairman of the evening is not known. As was the case last year the only verdict as to the winner will be rendered by the audience, according to the English system.

In its two debates thus far held, the Oxford team lost to Bates and succeeded in tying Dartmouth. Since the verdict was in both cases rendered by the audience, this record is considered good, because the bias of the audience has generally influenced its judgment in favor of the home team.

Tomorrow evening the Oxonians will attempt to argue with the ladies; for they are scheduled to meet the Vassar team at Poughkeepsie, N. Y. Vassar has not been beaten in debating on its home floor for many years.
