AMORY PICKED TO STROKE UNIVERSITY

First and Second Crews Will Race Over Four-Mile Course--B Loses Storey Temporarily

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The stroke problem, which has been causing Dr. Howe considerable worry ever since the race with M. I. T. on May 13, was definitely settled yesterday afternoon, Amory, last year's Freshman captain, replacing Brown in the pace-setter's position.

Following the Technology contest, in which the University boat, stroked by Amory, showed a noticeable tendency to shorten up and wash out under racing pressure, the coaches decided to give Brown the assignment for a while, and it was the latter who would have set the beat against Cornell had the Ithaca event not been called off. However, while this arrangement worked to advantage in practice when the crew was pulling a comparatively slow stroke, the results obtained in the sprints were not so satisfactory. This fact was clearly brought out last week when the Junior eight, under Amory's generalship, twice defeated Crew A over the mile and seven-eighths course, and as a result Dr. Howe decided once more to consider a change.

Both Men Tried Yesterday

In the work-outs yesterday and on Monday afternoon, the two stroke candidates alternated at the position on Crew A. A wide variety in pace was experimented with, the men rowing alternately at a very low beat and again at racing speed. Following the practice yesterday, when the first eight came back swinging in good form behind Amory, Dr. Howe announced that the latter would be the one to set the pace against Yale.

Owing to the temporary absence of Storey, who has been forced by injuries sustained in a recent automobile accident to lay off for a few days, the second University boat has not been able to test out Crew A again as yet, but the coaches expect to hold the first long distance practice this Friday when the two shells are to compete over a four-mile course. This stretch will be made possible by starting the crews at the Cambridge Boat House above Anderson Bridge and sending them down stream as far as the Union Boat Club.
