PRESIDENT HARDING UNABLE TO ATTEND COMMENCEMENT DAY

Word was received at the University yesterday that President Harding, who had hoped to be present at the Commencement exercises next Thursday, will be unable to leave Washington at that time. For this reason the special regulations requiring tickets for admission to the College Yard for Commencement Day have been cancelled. The other arrangements will remain as already announced.

The President made tentative plans several weeks ago to attend the Commencement exercises both at Yale next Wednesday and at the University the following day, but the pressure of business in Washington is such that he feels he should remain there. Although a comparatively small number of bills are pending in Congress, they are of the greatest importance.

Announcement that Mr. Harding would be unable to carry out his plans was made following a conference at the White House yesterday morning between the President and Senator Henry Cbaot Lodge '71. The measures which are particularly holding the President's attention include the general tariff, the ship subsidy and the adjusted compensation for World War veterans.

President Harding received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Princeton University on Friday, June 9, the twelfth President of the United States to be thus honored. The honorary degree was awarded by Dean West of the Graduate College after the President had dedicated the Battle Monument at Princeton.

In his speech of acceptance President Harding said in part, "If there be misgivings as to the merit of my service in the past, surely this distinction must inspire its recipient to redoubled effort to prove worthy of it."
