Track practice yesterday was marked by time trials for the University and Freshman teams, in preparation for the meets on Saturday. On that day, the University will meet Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and 1925, Exeter Academy.
The University time trials, which produced satisfactory contests, will bear greatly on the selection of the men to enter the meet next Saturday. In the 100-yard dash, the same two heats were each run twice. In the first batch of men, Wansker and Chase each secured a first and a second place, but in the second heat, Keyes won both races. In the 220-yard dash, Wansker and Keyes were victors in their heats. The first was then run over again, and this time Chase beat our Wansker for first place. Colt won the 440-yard dash, nosing out Howe by a few feet. The 880-yard run proved a thrilling contest, Merrill passing Newhall in the last stretch and winning by several yards. J. C. White was a strong third. Burke did not enter the regular mile, but ran a fast three laps later in the afternoon. The two-mile squad ran only a mile and a half. The low hurdles were run in two heats, in which Thayer and Monks were successful. Thayer was victorious a second time, when the first heat was run over. The high hurdlers did not run yesterday, and the field event men held only an ordinary work-out.
The second of the series of Garcelon hurdle races will be held this afternoon, the races consisting of 65-yard high hurdles, and 120-yard low hurdles. The winners will receive miniature bronze hurdles. Hauers and Fitts, who won the two races on April 26, are on that account ineligible to compete today.
The summary of the events is as follows:
