The University has announced that the new School of Public Health will open in September; it has been made possible by an endowment from the Rockefeller Foundation which will ultimately amount to over two million dollars. "The object of the school," reads the statement, "will be o prepare students for careers in public health by providing the scientific round work of expert knowledge which underlies efficient health administration, together with actual personal acquaintance with modern public health practice of the best types.

By organizing this department, the University will do much to improve methods of public health work; at present the majority of men in this field have had no specific preparation, and on account of lack of background, have not had the vision to develop many new ideas. True, there are some who have had the mechanical training--builders of sanitary systems, waterworks architects, city planner--; and some who have had adequate medical training; but practically none who have had both. To offer a combined training is the purpose of the new school.

Heretofore emphasis has been placed on the individual rather than the community because the medical profession has been more concerned with curing disease that preventing it. Now that prevention is receiving more thought, the community must be the center of attention; the new school has an unusual opportunity to be of service.
