PROVIDENCE VETERANS DEFEAT NET-MEN 5-4

The University tennis team lost its first home-match of the season to the East Side Tennis Club of Providence, R. I., Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-4. The steadiness of the Providence veterans was too much for the hard-hitting but erratic playing of most of the Crimson players. The visiting team had several former state champions and players of national prominence, and it is doubtul whether the Crimson will have as stiff opposition again this season.

If there was cause for disappointment in the score of the match, it was almost overbalanced by the brilliant playing of Captain Morris Duane '23 and K. S. Pfaffman '24. In defeating J. D. E. Jones 6-3, 7-5, Duane played tennis which at times was spectacular and which was featured by his over-head smashing and his ability to place a fast back-hand shot down either side-line. Pfaffman in beating C. H. Shaw 6-4, 6-4 played at the top of his game and displayed an effective mastery of ground strokes despite the wind which swept in dusty gales over the courts.

Even Break in Singles

G. C. Guild '23 secured an even break for the Crimson in the singles matches when he finally conquered C. F. Curley after a hard, three-set match 3-6, 7-5, 11- 9. The visitor who has at times been champion of both Rhode Island and Oregon, had a great amount of steadiness and accuracy and it took Guild's best playing to earn the victory. The first doubles match in which Duane and Pfaffman beat Curley and W. W. Ingraham '25 6-3, 6-8, 6-4, provided some of the fastest rallies of the entire match. Ingraham, although a Freshman here, played with the Providence team, but his ability was unable to check the varied attack of the Crimson team coupled as it was with speed and accurate placing.

Doubles.--Duane and Pfaffman (H) defeated W. W. Ingraham and Curley (P), 6-3, 6-8, 6-4; Vose and Shaw (P) defeated Key and Guild (H), 6-4, 6-4; Arthur Ingraham and Owen (P) defeated J. D. Farnham and Holmes (H), 7-5, 6-0.
