COACH TOLBERT WANTS MORE WEIGHT THROWERS

Urges Crew Candidates to Spend Hour Each Day With Track Squad-Seven New Men Report for University-More Competition Today

The cinder track had dried sufficiently by yesterday afternoon to permit Coach Bingham to put his large squad of runners through the first real practice of the season. Seven new men reported for the University team and three for the Freshman, but Coach Tolbert is still in need of mere material for the yearling shot-put and hammer-throw. In the past it has been possible for men who are rowing to spend an hour or so each afternoon in track work and Coach Tolbert is sure that he can develop winning material in the weight events from inexperienced men if they are willing to practice regularly.

Coach Farrell who has been supervising the work of the field event men this reason underneath the Stadium, was able to take his squad of hammer throwers outside yesterday for an informal competition. Captain Brown won the event with L. K. Marshall '23 second, S. B. Andrew '23 third, and B. S. Cogan '23, J. V. R. Bright '24 and H. S. Grew Jr. '24 finishing in order. At 2.30 o'clock this afternoon there will be a similar competition for both University and Freshman candidates, while the runners will work out under the supervision of Coach Bingham and the sprinters will receive special attention front Mr. R. C. Foster '11.

The javelin men have shown marked improvement, and R. M. Greenidge '24, H. C. Janin '22; and S. W. Leck '23 were obtaining good results yesterday in spite of the slippery footing.

Although Coach Bingham has divided the men into squads according to events, he does not expect to appoint squad captains to assist in the coaching until the beginning of next week.
