WIDE DIVERSITY IN COMPETITIVE ATHLETIC TROPHIES

More than a dozen athletic trophiec, several of which have considerable historic significance in the annals of the University will be competed for this spring in crew, track, baseball, and tennis.

The oldest of these is the Beaeon Plaque and Cup, a trophy awarded with one or two exceptions, each spring for the past 60 years to the winning class crew. it was first competed for in 1858 being won in that year by a crew of which President Eliot, at number 3, was a member. It was won last spring by the Sophomore crew composed of the following: E. S. Mathews '23, H. H. Fuller, Jr. '23, C. K. Cummings '23, M. W. Self '23, N. C. Webb '23, H. C. Baleh '23, T. J. Curtis '23.

The Slocum trophy will be raced for this spring by the Freshman dormitory crews. It was awarded by Thomas W. Slocum '90 in 1914.

Two sculling trophies are to be awarded to the University champions in that sport. The first of these is the single Scull Championship Cup which was presented in 1887 by Mr. R. P. Carroll '85 and Mr. J. E. Thayer '85. It was won last spring by C. S. Nutt '24. The other sculling trophy is the Harvard University Regents Cup which was awarded for annual competition in 1913.

The three track trophies offered for University competition will be awarded on the results of today's races in the annual spring handicap meet. The oldest of these is the Frank Wells Handicap Mile Cup, presented by Mr. Frank Wells '64 in 1893. Captain D. F. O'Connell '21 was the winner last spring, running from scratch. The "Two-Twenty" Cup was presented by Lawrence Paine Dodge '08 in 1909. Vinton Chapin '23 is the present holder of the cup as a result of his victory last spring in 22 minutes and three-fifths of a second. Mr. S. Gannett Wells '86 presented the '86 Quarter-Mile Cup in 1898. H. W. Howe '22 was the winner in last year's competition in 53 seconds with a handicap of 20 yards.

The Barrell Wendell Jr. Trophy Cup and the Wingate Memorial Trophy are the two baseball prizes to be presented this spring. The former trophy, which was won in 1920 by Captain A. J. Conlon '22, is awarded each year to the member of the University team making the highest total points based on safe arrivals at first base, sacrifice hits, stolen bases, and runs. The Wingate trophy, which is awarded each year to the best all-around player, was won last year by George Owen '23.

The Phillip Nathaniel Jacobson Tennis Cup will be awarded this spring to the champion in the University spring tennis tournament. This trophy, presented by Mrs. Arthur E. Jackson in 1920, is awarded semi-annually, and was won last fall by Captain Morris Duane '23.

In addition to these trophies, members of the Freshman dormitories will compete for the Graduates' Cup in Track and the Freshman Baseball Trophy, awarded in 1921 by Mr. Oden Roberts '86.
