Two hundred and twenty-eight members of the track squads were practicing on Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon, as 17 new men reported to Coach Bingham for the University squad and nine more came to swell the Freshman ranks. There is still a scarcity of candidates in some events particularly in the Freshman shot-put and hammer-throw.
As on Tuesday the practice was confined to conditioning work on the new track for the runners, with starting practice for sprinters, while the field event men worked out under the supervision of Coach Farrell and Coach Tolbert under the Stadium; Coach Mikkola superintended the work of the javelin and discuss throwers outside.
The afternoon the members of both squads will report at definite times according their events. In general the sprinters and runners come during the early part of the afternoon with the field events taking place later. Sub-captains to assist in the coaching will be appointed for each group during the early part of next week. It was also announced yesterday that Mr. R. C. Foster '11, captain of the track team in his Senior year and winner of both the intercollegiate 100 and 220-yard dashes that year, will be on hand Tuesday afternoon to help Coach Bingham in giving individual attention to sprinters.
