Taking third place in the New England intercollegiates on Saturday, the University wrestling team completed a very mediocre season. Throughout the year the Crimson mat-en were handicapped by severe injuries which contributed heavily to the seven defeats which were sustained out of the nine matches on the schedule. The University scored a total of 92 points to its opponents' 149.
Before the opening of the season, Captain J. F. Brown '22 had to resign because of the pressure of track work. H. B. Walker '22, who wrestles in the 115-pound class, was chosen to lead the Crimson.
The team made an auspicious start on January 21, defeating the strong Boston Young Men's Christian Union team, 14-11. Captain Walker, H. J. Freedman '23, and W. G. Code '24 winning their bouts.
Next followed a series of four defeats at the hands of the Boys' Club of New York, Springfield College, Norwich University, and M. I. T. Throughout these matches Bennol Lockwood '22 was the outstanding performer for the Crimson. It was in the Springfield meet that Captain Walker received an injury which kept him out for the rest of the season.
On March 4 the University won from Princeton, 16-15, mainly through Lockwood's ability to gain the deciding point by winning a fall in the unlimited class.
Defeats followed in succession by Dartmouth and Brown, and finally a defeat by Yale on March 11 after a hard struggle in every class.
In the intercollegiate matches on Saturday, the M. I. T. and Brown teams clearly superior although Lockwood and Financis Rouilard '23 put up excellent exhibitions.
Prspects for a successful season next year look bright with the following men returning: W. G. Cole '24, H. J. Freedman '23, W. F. Holmes '24, Curtis Nelson '24, and Francis Rouillard '23:
The overwhelming defeat at the hands of the Yale Freshman on March 18 brought the 1925 season to an unsuccessful close. The yearlings' record was two victories and four defeats, but they, like the University team, were hindered by injures which kept them from presenting their fullest strength in several matches.
In the first meet of the season, with Andover, on February 18, the Freshmen were defeated by a score of 13 to 11. On February 24, the 1925 grapplers beat the M. I. T. Freshmen by the score of 19 to eight. Prospects at this time seemed of the brightest, but a number of minor injuries were enough to cause defeat in the meet with Worcester Academy on March 4, by 18 to six. In a reversal of form, the Freshman defeated Tufts 1925 by 16 to eight, but lost to Pomfret on March 11, by 26 to three. They were defeated by Yale 1925 by the score of 29 to nothing. The following men gained their numerals by taking part in the contest with Yale: Murray, Campbell, R. G. Clart, J. P. Hubbard, Milton Krook, Captain E. G. Lowry Jr., L. B. Smith, and J. O. Tragard.
