Final arrangements have recently been concluded for the summor educational trips to France being organized by the Comite des Voyages d'Etudes en France, in cooperation with the Campagnie Francaise du Tourisme. The trips are designed to give students and instructors in American colleges a chance to study in French Universities and to derive the benefits of European travel at the least possible expense. Thee trips will last about ten weeks and will include, besides the regular period of study at the universities, tours of devastated area, theatrical entertainments, trips to points of interest, and many other activities designed for pleasure as well as profit.
French line steamers will conduct students across the Atlantic in several voyages, starting June 20 and lasting until July 2. After landing the men will go directly to Paris, arriving about July 10; but they will stay only for a short time in the Capitol, for at that point the groups will scatter and go to their several universities.
Besancon, Dijon, Grenoble, Nancy, Paris, Portiers, Strasbourg, and Toulouse, are the educational centers where the committee has made arrangements for the American party.
Would Have University Men Together
An endeavor is being made to put all the men from the University into one of the above mentioned centers. Mr. P. G. Lepaulle, who is organizing the group from the University, has expressed his desire to place the members in Grenoble, though each student will have the right to state his preference on the application blanks. He believes that its climate, its situation in the Alps, and its scholastic standing all made it the place affording the greatest opportunities and the greatest pleasure. In order to carry out his plan, however, the applications will have to be made early, since the committee must make the allotment for the colleges all over the country.
Those students who choose Grenoble will have an opportunity to select studies from the following list of courses--these courses to begin on July 12:
Practical French Exercises, Translation, Grammatical Exercises, Grammatical Theory. Written Composition, Pronunciation and Diction, Vocabulary and Formation of Words, Syntax, Conversation, Diction Phonetics, French Literature, History of France, Geography, Philology, Vocabulary Technique, Commercial Correspondence, and several other commercial courses. Ample opportunity will be found on the voyage to confer with advisers as to the courses to pursue.
Trips Planned at Grenoble
Definite plans for excursions have already been made at the University of Grenoble. Four automobile trips will be taken through the Alpine roads and three railway trips to the important towns in the section. All men who have attended universities outside of Paris will have an eight-day stay there just before their return to the United States about September 10.
The committee is doing everything in its power to make the expense as small as possible. It was previously announced that the entire cost of the trip would be $625, but arrangements have now been made so that $255 will be paid in dollars and 4395 francs will be paid in French currency, thus giving the students the benefit of the exchange. This saving should amount to between $20 and $40. Of the $255, $25 must be paid at the time of making the application, the balance to be paid before June 1. If a student finds before that date that he will be unable to sail, all his money will be returned; if the committee is advised at any time afterwards, the $75 may be subject to a forfeit to the steamship company.
To aid still more in the financial problem the committee has arranged with a New York bank to buy the full number of francs on payment of 25 percent of the amount. The price will cover all traveling expenses, tuition fees, theatrical performances, accommodations and meals, and all tips except on the Atlantic voyage.
