HOCKEY TEAM IN STIFF SCRIMMAGE

University Men Will Scrimmage Tech Today--Rest on Friday for Contest With Eli Six

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

No rest was in store yesterday for the Crimson sextet that tied the Westminster players in the gruelling contest on Monday night, for Coach Claflin sent his men through another workout in the afternoon, when the team met the Melrose sextet in a practice scrimmage. The University skaters showed up well in spite of the strenuous play the day before, and they succeeded in nosing out their opponents with the same well organized attack that they used against Westminster. The work-out was part of the week's stiff schedule that Coach Claflin has planned in order to bring the team up to the highest point of efficiency by Saturday, when the Crimson skaters will meet Yale at the Arena. The plans will probably include a day of complete rest on Friday so that the men will have a chance to recover from the taxing program.

Second String Men Improved

The absence of Crosby gave Coach Claflin a chance to thoroughly try out his substitutes and the experiment showed that there is great strength in the second string material. Gratwick ably filled Crosby's berth on the defence and several times left his position to make spectacular dashed through the Melrose secondary line. But the improvement was not confined to the defence substitutes for Larocque and Hill have developed so that they are nearly on a par with the regulars. This means that the University will have five strong men from which to choose their offensive weapons, and so will enable Coach Claflin to keep a fresh team on the ice against Yale.

The scrimmage yesterday was featured by the excellent team work of the forward players, but it was not until ten minutes of scrimmaging that the attack was able to weaken the Melrose defence. Then Owen went past the secondary line and scored the first point on an individual drive.

Coach Claflin was much encouraged with the improvement that was shown on Monday night, and after another stiff workout this afternoon with the Technology sextet the Crimson should be ready for the Eli team Saturday.
