Winning four out of five matches against the Newton Centre team at the University squash courts Saturday, the University squash racquets team moved from last to third place in the Massachusetts Squash Racquets Association, having a record of five games won and five lost.
In number one match, W. P. Dixon '25 starred in defeating R. C. Cooke, one of the best players in the state, 15-12, 13-15, 12-15, 15-12, 15-9. Dixon won through his skill in keeping the ball high and far back in the court, and away from Cooke's forehand. Captain E. M. Hinkle '23 defeated Captain E. S. Church in a close match, while Carroll Harrington '24 defeated T. W. Cooke.
The defeat of R. C. Bray by A. L. Smith '25, 12-15, 16-13, 15-7, 10-15, 15-11, was the big upset of the afternoon. Although the latter is a veteran player, having reached the finals of the Canadian championship last year, Smith's ability in returning the ball won for him in the end. F. I. Carpenter '24, playing his first league match, lost to P. M. Goddard.
By their wholly unexpected defeat of the Union Boat Club team at the Boston courts four matches to one, Team B reached second place in Class B league. The whole team showed a great improvement over last week and is now a serious contender in the Association.
