ONE MAN CHOSEN FOR EACH TEAM AS RESULT OF DEBATING TRIALS

Preliminary trials to decide the personnel of the class teams for the coming interclass debate were held last night at 7.30 o'clock in Harvard 5. Twenty eight men reported for the trials, fifteen of them from the Freshman class, which showed unusual ability. Each candidate had to deliver a five-minute speech on either side of the question: Resolved: "That the policy of abstaining from intersectional athletic contests should be continued". The judges were chosen from among the members of the Harvard Debating Council and were: W. S. Holbrook Jr. 2L., R. S. Fanning '23, P. R. Harmel '23, J. C. Hover '23, A. C. Surber Jr. '23.

Owing to the keen competition displayed by the candidates in their speeches, the judges have not yet decided upon the complete personnel of the teams. One man, however, has been chosen from each class, on account of outstanding ability, to act as captain of his class team. These men are L. B. Young '23, W. T. Howe '24, G. E. Barton '25, and W. B. Stone '26.

Judges to Meet this Morning

This morning J. C. Hover '23 who is managing the debate will meet the other judges to discuss the relative merits of the candidates, and tentative decisions will be made. This afternoon at 5 o'clock the four captains will meet Hover in Weld 37 and these decisions will be discussed and modified according to the judgement of the captains, and the four teams of three men each will be definitely decided upon. The subject for the coming debates will also be picked.

The outlook for Freshman debating is especially bright this year. Practically all the Freshman candidates showed great promise, and a team is shortly to be organized, entirely apart from the team in the interclass debate. This team will have a Fall debate, in all probability with Bowdoin College, and a triangular Spring debate with Yale and Princeton.
