In every well-ordered home three works are recognized as necessary: the Bible Shakespeare, and the Telephone Book. Dormitory rooms may usually make one substitution in this list: the alternative is the University Register Year, after year it is compiled, published, serves its use in the students daily life, and is thrown into the discard to make way for a new edition. Not a work of permanence in itself, none the less its annual appearance makes it an institution, and it represents a permanent need.
To serve this end, early publication is of first importance; the Register this year has equalled the fine record of last year's edition, and is already available. In other ways, too, it has carried on and seven extended the good example of its predecessors. The Board has had useful innovation constantly in view; pictures, diagrams, and a substantial reduction in price are all points in its favor. In general make-up it has become a far more pleasing volume.
In its eagerness to satisfy the greatest number, the Board has perhaps decreased the Register's utility in certain minor respects. The omission of the graduate schools leaves that large part of the University without the helpful guide which the College finds so essential. One may wonder if the directories by dormitories and by cities are of as much importance as last year's complete directory with home addresses, local addresses, and cross-references all in one.
But the telephone book, even with street-numbers omitted, would still be invaluable; and in the case of the Register the omissions are insignificant in comparison with the broad and inclusive contents. It is a product which needs no advertising; its value is already proved.
