BRIGGS DEFEATS TURNER AND WINS UNION TENNIS

Alden Briggs '25 won the cup in the Union tennis tournament yesterday by defeating F. S. Turner 1L, in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Briggs won the Union tournament last year, and Turner is a former Leland Stanford player.

Turner took the lead in the opening set until the score was 3-1, but then Briggs improved the accuracy of his placements and caught up; after that he was always ahead.

Both men used a powerful forehand drive, and neither attempted to come up to the net very frequently, although Briggs made a few kills from this position. Since the backcourt game was used for the most part, there was little lobbing, but much hard hitting. Both men served double faults, but Turner's came at times when he could ill afford them. Turner also lost several points off his backhand.

In the doubles tournament, which is now well through the first round, the results of yesterday's matches are as follows:

Gordon '25 and L. B. Wood '25 defeated R. C. Rothenberg '24 and P. d. Rittenberg '25 6-2, 6-1; H. M. Hopkins 3E.S. and W. H. Harkness Jr. '24 defeated D. W. Evans 2E.S. and E. F. Craig '25 6-3, 9-7.
