Professor Pirenne Takes Up Introductory Phrases of His Subject--Blames Islam for Decline of Cities

Professor Henri Pirenne, the first Belgian exchange professor to American universities, delivered the first of his series of five lectures on "The Origin of Cities in Western Europe" to an audience of over 200 people yesterday afternoon in Emerson D.

President Lowell introduced Professor Pirenne, who in a short introduction in English, apologized for delivering his main speech in French.

In closing he discussed the reasons for the disappearance of cities after the decline of the Roman Empire, stating that it was Islam that destroyed them.
