Breaking into the front rank for the first time this year, after an extremely checkered early-season record, the University basketball team accomplished the unexpected and turned the tables on the Worcester quintet in the feature match of Saturday's double-header at Hemenway Gymnasium. It was, however, no mere turn of fate that gave the Crimson Victory over the New England champions, for from the opening whistle when they took an early lead Coach Wachter's men steadily increased their advantage, piling basket on basket for a total score of 31 points against 17.
Although playing against heavy odds, Captain Berry of the Worcester aggregation proved himself worthy of his reputation as All-New England center. His work bordered on the sensational and he alone was responsible for 15 of his team's 17 points, scoring freely from the floor and displaying uncanny ability at the foul line. For the University, Fitts with his brilliant dashes down the court, Gordon with-his spectacular distance shots, and McLeish with his accurate penalty tosses vied for individual honors, the latter tallying consistently from the floor and runing up a total of 11 points out of 14 free throws.
Engineers Were Favorites
Taking the floor with three successive victories over the Crimson, the New England champions were the logical favorites. The visitors, however, were out-classed from the start, and through the entire contest seemed unable to take the offensive, while the University forwards found no difficulty in solving the Engineers' vaunted five-man defense. Not once during the first half did the Engineers succeed in caging a basket from the floor, their lone four points during this period being the result of penalties. Although the University led at the end of the first session, 9-4, it was not until the final period that the red-jerseyed men showed their best form.
The summary: Score: Harvard 31, Worcester Tech 17. Goals from floor: Fitts 4, Gordon 4, McLeish, Rudofski, Berry 3, Whelpley, Goals from fouls: McLeish 11, Berry 9, Referee Sonders, Umpire: McGuinness.
