SUPERIOR TEAM PLAY BRINGS UNIVERSITY FIVE 43-29 VICTORY

Superior team play, accurate passing and shooting combined to give the University five a 43 to 29 victory over Clark University last night in the Hemenway Gymnasium. Captain McLeish put the Crimson in the lead when he scored on the first play of the game, and although the visitors tied the score early in the contest, they never were able to forge ahead. The University captain played a stellar game at right forward, tallying six baskets from the floor and running up a total of eleven points out of fourteen free tries from the foul line. Excellent long shooting by Fowler and Smith, the Clark right forward and center, featured the offensive play of the Worcester team but, by the second half, the Crimson backfield solved their opponents' attack and held them to three baskets.

The play in the opening period was nearly even and at the end Coach Wachter's men led by only a two point margin. In the middle of the half the Worcester team rallied and threatened for a moment but baskets by Gordon, Fitts and Black enabled the crimson jerseyed quintet to keep the lead.

Two points from the foul line and a clever basket by McLeish increased the Crimson total at the start of the second half. Clark tried to cut down the University advantage but Coach Wachter's men tightened their defense by continually breaking up the visitors' passing game. Both teams were playing at top speed on the attack and frequent foul- ing resulted. Black and Rudofsky, the sturdy Crimson defence men, were forced to leave the floor because of personal fouls and Feiring and Miller were sent in.

By the middle of the period Gordon, McLeish and Fitts by beautifully executed passing and clever follow shooting had put the University well in the lead and in the closing minutes of play Coach Wachter sent in his second string men.

In last night's contest, the University five displayed the best brand of ball that it has played this season. The attack was carried well, featured by short passes and close shooting. The two-man defense worked perfectly, forcing the Clark forwards to shoot hurriedly and from midfloor. The Crimson combination as it stands at present runs smoothly and can play at top speed throughout the game. Last year Clark was defeated by only a two point margin in the Crimson's opening game. The Worcester team last night was composed of veterans and headed by Fowler and Smith presented a powerful scoring attack.
