Eli Phi Betas Accept Challenge

In a letter to Hector Lazo '21, captain of the University Phi Beta Kappa baseball team, the captain of the Yale Phi Beta Kappa nine, Edwin Mims Jr., answers the challenge of the former with the following reply:

"The Yale Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa accepts with alacrity the challenge of the Harvard Chapter to meet on the baseball field for a test of strength, endurance and wits. We have already begun to blister our lily-white hands and arouse disquieting pains in our stalwart right arms.

"We should like to suggest May 30, Decoration Day, as the date most convenient for us. On that day we could secure the University field, as both the University and the Freshmen will be away. We have conferred with the baseball manager and found that it will be practically impossible to secure the field on any other day. And certainly no one would dare suggest that such a game be played on any less imposing field. If this arrangement is convenient to you, I shall expect to secure official confirmation as soon as possible."
