Speaking at an "Open Forum on Industrial Relations" held in the Trophy Room of the Union yesterday afternoon, Mr. James C. Emery, Counsel for the National Association of Manufacturers, declared that if American industry is to continue on a sound and reasonable basis that American principles must be observed in dealing with labor. He began his talk by stating that "an open shop is one in which there is no arbitrary discrimination in employment, or, in other words, one in which a man gets work without belonging to a union.
"To be free to select and pursue a profession or occupation is one of the most fundamental rights a man possesses. This principle must be perpetuated and sustained. When a man exercises his right to take a job he is exchanging his labor for something he wants more. The open shop is a practical application of a man's freedom of choice in this question and hence is in accordance with the American principle of personal freedom.
People Must Be Considered First
"Industrial policies must be determined by the public, especially since life has become so complex. It is the interests of the whole people rather than the interests of any particular employers or employees which must be considered primarily. The answer to the question of the relation of employers to employees is that they may be only permitted to deal with each other in such a way that they will not interfere with the rights of the public such as the maintenance of satisfactory public services. There is as much reason to control labor unions as corporations and to establish open shops everywhere. The right to organize has a negative as well as an affirmative side. If the union first, the United States second' is the watchword, and if a man cannot get a job unless he joins a union, even although he thoroughly disagrees with its aims, then the principles on which this country was created are in danger of being wiped out and the future existence of the United States threatened."
