More than 3,000 athletes, representing 400 colleges and schools of the United States will enter the annual relay carnival of the University of Pennsylvania, to be held at Franklin Field, Philadelphia, on April 29 and 30. The latest figures show that 104 colleges, 128 high schools, 54 preparatory schools, 78 grammar schools, and 17 parochial institutions, a total of 381, have entered teams. This number is increasing daily and it is confidently expected that when the entries close Friday more than 400 will have entered teams.
Definite assurance came last week that the French team which is to enter the carnival will sail for this country on April 9. The French relay team includes Tery, Andree, and Delvart, all of whom ran on France's Olympic relay team last summer.
The recent victory of the University of Illinois in the Western Conference indoor championship indicates this college will come East with at least three relay teams of high standard. Illinois has without doubt one of the strongest track teams in the country at present. Wharton, a two-miler, and Alberts, who jumped 6 feet, 4-18 inches at the Western Conference indoor meet, are two stars of great ability. Osborne another high-jumper will be among those who should give Landon of Yale, intercollegiate and Olympic champion, a hard tussle.
Announcement was made yesterday that the Navy would be represented at the relay carnival, this being the first time that the Annapolis track team has been given permission to compete away from home. The "Middle" team will enter the distance medley relay the two-mile college relay, the discus and javelin throws, and the Pentathlon.
