The Freshman autumn crew men eight won the one mile Freshman race yesterday afternoon and has the honor of the meeting the best three Freshman boats this afternoon. Showing exceptionally good form for work so early in the season, the winning boat rowed well over the whole course and crossed the finish line one and a quarter lengths in the lead of its nearest competitor, covering the distance in 5 minutes and 46 seconds. Next in line were the third autumn crew, the fourth autumn crew, and the second inexperienced football men crew; the third autumn crew trailed the seconds by a length and a half and the football men were a length further in the rear when they crossed the finish line. The time and the general appearance of the crews was very encouraging in the opinion of the coaches.
150 lb. Crew Makes Good Time
In a three quarter of a mile race the long 150 pound triumphed over the short 150 pound crew, covering the distance in 5 minutes and 16 seconds.
The race between today's winner and the three best yearling crews will be held over a one mile course this afternoon at 4.45. The race will probably settle down to a duel between the first autumn crew and the experienced football crew, with the odds in favor of the latter. The men in the middle of the experienced football men crew, C. H. Hollister at 3, R. C. Storey at 4, E. K. McCagg at 5, Parker Hamilton at 6, and A. L. Hobson are especially strong, with great weight and several years experience on school eights.
The first autumn crew has had considerable experience this year but lacks the weight and power of its rival.
