The University medley relay team went down in defeat before Yale at the Guaranty Club games in Madison Square Garden, on Saturday night but due to the excellent running of Captain O'Connel in the first mile, forged ahead of Columbia for second place; Princeton, which was expected to enter, did not send its team to the games.
Starting off with the quarter, Columbia took the lead, with Yale second and the University third, holding that place through the 220-yard dash. Taking the baton in second place Campbell of Yale passed the Columbia runner and put the Elis in the front for the final event. Captain O'Connell cut down Yale's lead and passed the Columbia man, but was unable to overcome the tremendous disadvantage in which he was placed by Campbell's wonderful running. The other University entries in the relay, Richard Chute '22, E. O. Gourdin '21, and Bayard Wharton '22, less experienced runners, did not show the brilliancy of O'Connell but ran very creditably.
In the 70-yard dash R. D. Howard '23 won his heat but was eliminated in the semi-finals, while Gourdin gained a place in the finals to finish fourth. R. S. Whitney '22 did not run in the hurdles on account of an injured foot.
