TEAM A DEFENSE SHOWS STRENGTH IN B. A. A. SCRIMMAGE

Coach Claflin Gives Goal-Tends Stiff Tryouts--No Practice for University Players Today

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A stiff scrimmage against the B. A. A. team which resulted in an 8-3 victory for the blue-jerseyed players was the feature of the University hockey practice at the Arena yesterday afternoon. Both Coach Claflin and Mr. Alfred Winsor '02 were present, the latter criticising the playing of the B. A. A. team as well as the Crimson men. After the afternoon's work-out the University squad was cut from 50 to 27 players, the showing made by the men in the scrimmages of the last few days being the chief basis of selection. The following is the list of those retained:

Forwards.--Donald Angier '22, C. W. Baker Jr. '22, Nelson Cabot '24, Maxwell Fish '23, G. C. Guild '23, F. H. Hovey Jr. '22, Corliss Lamont '24, Joseph Larocque Jr. '23, J. J. Lee '24, E. C. Lincoln '22, J. M. Martin '22, R. S. Phillips '24, F. T. Pratt '22, and G. G. Walker '24.

Defence Men.--W. E. Crosby '24, Mitchell Gratwick '22, S. C. Graves '24, F. S. Bill '24, L. R. Nichols '24, H. N. Pratt '24, and George Owen Jr. '23.

Goals.--Malcolm Dole '24, J. G. Flint '22, R. R. Higgins '22, H. C. Janin '22, P. M. Sears '22, and T. F. Sherman '24.

Team A of the University lined up against the B. A. A. sextet the same as yesterday except for goal. Coach Claflin tried out in this position his entire squad of goal-tenders during the afternoon, retaining only the five men listed above.

Team A Defense Plays Well

The first part of the scrimmage witnessed excellent defensive work on the part of the Crimson sextet which time after time halted the fast and shifty B. A. A. forwards. Not until the University substitutes were sent in did the practice game become at all one-sided. When the more experienced B. A. A. men tore through the Crimson net-protector with a fusillade of shots, many of which found their mark. The three University tallies were made by Guild, Lamont, and Louderback.

Three former University hockey stars took part in the scrimmage for the B. A. A. R. W. Emmons 3rd '21 and G. A. Percy '18, captain of the Crimson team in that year, alternated at right wing, while E. L. Bigelow '21, captain of last year's sextet, played center. Bigelow was up to his usual form and proved himself the speediest man on the ice.

There will be no work-out today owing to the fact that the usual time of practice for the University squad has been entirely taken up by other teams.
