At a meeting of the football letter men yesterday afternoon, Charles Chauncey Buell '23 of Hartford, Conn., quarterback on the eleven this fall, was unanimously elected football captain for next season.
Last year Buell won his football letter playing quarterback on the team. He prepared at Pomfret, and when he came to the University in 1919 he captained the Freshman football team, holding the position of quarterback.
Both as a player and a leader in football, Buell's merit is shown by his past record. The two victories which the Crimson has gained in the past two years over Yale may be attributed largely to his judgment in handling the team and his brilliancy in individual playing. In the 1920 game, the University team launched an offensive based largely on the forward passing game. Buell was on the throwing end of practically all the passes. The 9 to 0 score was made by three field goals, two of which were kicked by Buell.
During the 1921 season, the newly elected captain scored 17 points, kicking eight goals after touchdowns were made and scoring three goals from field. In the Yale game, it was Buell's 43-yard runback of Aldrich's punt at the end of the third quarter that placed the ball on the Blue 12-yard line, thereby making possible the touchdown for the Crimson two minutes later.
With 30 men from this year's squad returning next fall, of whom 13 are letter men, Coach Fisher will have a larger squad of veterans to work with than he had this year, when there were only 20 men back from the previous year. Buell, W. P. Howe Jr. '24, and J. J. Lee '24 will all be available for quarterback next fall. The backfield men who are expecting to return are George Owen Jr. '23, P. F. Coburn '23, R. W. Fitts '23, Vinton Chapin '23, W. H. Churchill '23, E. L. Gehrke '24, Lewis Gordon '24, Percy Jenkins '24, and K. S. Pfaffman '24. For ends, Coach Fisher will have W. E. Crosby Jr. '24, R. P. Field '23, J. M. Hartley 2nd '23, K. N. Hill '24, and H. C. Janin '23, being forced to rely almost entirely on substitutes of this year's squad. The tackles will be taken from B. McK. Henry '24, A. L. Hobson Jr. '24, P. B. Kunhardt '23, A. H. Ladd '23, and W. V. Miller '23, while candidates for the guard positions will be C. J. Hubbard Jr. '24, Arthur Anthony '24, and H. S. Grew Jr. '24. The centers who will report next fail are H. W. Clark '23, Standish Bradford '24, D. S. Holder '24, and F. K. Kernan Jr. '24.
Besides the men mentioned, there will also be available for the eleven a quantity of excellent freshman material and several promising second team men
