In a close trial race over the half-mile course yesterday afternoon the Standish Hall eight was but two feet ahead of the Smith Halls boat as they shot between the finish buoys. The Gore crew crossed a close third, while the combination eight came in last,--about a length behind. The time made by the Standish boat was three minutes and eighteen seconds.
Yesterday's row was the last this fall in which these oarsmen were to be on fixed seats. Beginning Monday they will row on sliding seats. All men who had had no previous experience in rowing before this fall and have been practicing on the machines for the past two weeks will go out on the river in boats with fixed seats.
