With a team on which there are several untried players, and with but three days practice, the University will face Northeastern College nine at three o'clock this afternoon on Soldiers Field in the first of a series of practice games. Forty men have been reporting to Coach Slattery, who expects to use as many as possible of his players in this afternoon's contest. As yet he has not decided upon the line-up that will start.
Northeastern, on the other hand, has already had two weeks' work on the diamond. An interclass series, won by the Freshmen has just been finished, and many of the yearlings are expected in the college line-up. Among the veterans who appeared against the University last spring, and who will be on hand this afternoon, are Captain B. B. Robbins, short stop, and A. S. Dawe, third baseman.
Three Crimson Pitchers Available
Coach Slattery has three candidates for the mound position, two of them veterans of last season's squad, and a promising player of the 1924 Freshman team, in E. F. Goode '22, H. S. Russell E.S., and Grosvenor Bemis '24. Behind the bat J. D. Murphy '22, last year's University catcher is available, as well as R. H. Keegan '23, backstop on the University Second team last year, and L. C. Larrabee '24, catcher of last spring's Freshman nine.
Acting Captain E. C. Lincoln '22 is sure to start at third base, while the candidates for the berth at first base are R. G. Norris '24 and J. C. Bancroft '23. Either C. J. Mason '22 or R. P. Bullard '24 will start at second, and Robert Worthington '23 and Harry Gardner '24 are slated for short stop. In the outfield D. F. Thayer '23, J. S. Clark '23, L. A. Ballock '22 and A. S. Rogers '24 are the most likely candidates.
One or two games a week from now on as long as the weather permits will be scheduled for the University squad. A game with the State Street Trust Company of Boston has been tentatively arranged for this Thursday, and several other bank and commercial league teams will probably play on Soldiers Field this fall.
