Mr. George Wigglesworth '74, of Milton, has been elected President of the Board of Overseers of the University, to succeed Judge Robert Grant '73, of Boston, whose term of service on the Board has expired.
The new President of the Board has long been closely identified with affairs at the University and is serving his second term as an Overseer. He is also President of the Union in which position he succeeded the late Major Henry Lee Higginson '55. The Board of Overseers, over which Mr. Wiglesworth will preside this year, is composed of thirty-two men, including the President and Treasurer of the University and thirty others elected by the alumni for six-year terms. Its approval is required for the more important acts and appointments made by the Corporation of the University.
New appointments announced yesterday include those of G. W. Peirce, A.M. '99, as Rumford Professor of Physics to succeed E. H. Hall, who has retired from active teaching, and of Theodore Lyman '97 as Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, a post made famous by its tenure in the past by Benjamin Peirce '76 and Wallace C. Sabine, A.M. '88.
Dr. F. W. Peabody '03, who is now in China, has been promoted to a full professorship of medicine and M. O. Hudson to a full professorship of law, while Dr. C. M. Smith, M.D. '94, has been appointed to clinical professor of syphilology for a five-year term. The appointment of Dr. J. H. Means '07 as Assistant Professor of Medicine has also been approved by the Overseers.
Dr. C. H. Dunn '96 and Dr. F. B. Talbot '00 have been made members of the Faculty of Medicine for the current year.
