The letter received by the Harvard Student Liberal Club from the University of Berlin, published in the next column, is not without a certain unconscious humor. "But a new generation arises. A generation that shall rear the temple of humanity on the ruins of a ravaged world and dedicate it to the spirit of peace." Is that the work of the translator or is it true that "liberals" can talk only in one language? In another part of the letter the statement is made that there will always be misunderstanding among the nations as long as they "voice what may be the same idea in a different language." We may be sure at least that there will be no such misunderstanding among the "liberals" from right wing to left wing and back again; for they all use the same linge.
It may be considered a waste of space to give attention to such on innocuous, bit of rhetoric as this. It is however not only because of its general vacuity but because of the calm way in which it ignores the events of the day that we call attention to it. Liberals pride themselves on being progressive--up with the times. And yet these say:
"It seems as though a reconciliation were beyond the grasp of men." Has the University of Berlin heard no word of the Disarmament Conference?
The governments of four great powers are endeavoring to do the very thing that those opposed to them talk about--make an end of war. But the former hold the belief, untenable to these "liberals", that it is possible to abolish war without entirely reorganizing the world and casting off from tradition. Therefore our friends in Berlin ignore the effort.
This letter is an effective example of what a true liberal is not.
