Mrs. Edward MacDowell will lecture under the auspices of the Division of Music, Fine Arts, and Dramatic Literature, on the "MacDowell Colony at Peter-borough" in the John Knowles Paine Concert Hall, Monday evening, January 10, at 8.15 o'clock. The lecture will be open to the public.
The MacDowell Colony is unique, being the only one of its kind in this country. Every summer a large number of men and women painters, musicians, sculptors, poets, and other artists of recognized creative ability, upon recommendation, are invited to come to the colony. Here for a nominal amount they can devote their time to intensive work and the enjoyment of the company of the other members of the colony. During the summer, several festivals at which the various members of the colony give exhibitions of their work are held.
The plan was originally devised by Edward MacDowell, who gave up his large estate near Peterborough to the colony. For the last few years Mrs. MacDowell has been touring the country and explaining the project in detail.
In the history of the colony it has been frequented by a great many men of prominence who have recognized the benefits to be derived from such a plan.
