Coming up from behind in the last half, the Freshman basketball five nosed out the New Hampshire State 1924 quintet 36-33 at the Freshman Athletic Building last Saturday. Trailing by nine points at half time, the Crimson yearlings spurted at the start of the second period and broke into a lead which they held until the end.
Getting the jump on the first play, the Freshmen failed to score after several well-executed passes, and the State five uncorked a fast offense which netted several scores before the victors could cage a shot. The Crimson 1924 men had poor luck at shooting while the New Hampshire Freshmen sunk a volley of shots from all parts of the floor, and led 22-13 after the first period.
Coming out on the floor for the second half with renewed life, Coach Wachter's men dashed through the State quintet for ten points without allowing them to score. After taking time out the New Hampshire team rallied, and momentarily checked the University yearlings. Captain Gordon's machine could not be stopped, however, and continued to score while holding the losers to a total of eleven points for the half. The fast passing of D. H. Stevens and J. H. Sipp, coupled with Captain Gordon's clever foot work were the outstanding features of the rally, while the good guarding of Isadore Black, and J. L. Rudofsky held the opposing forwards well in check during the second period.
Captain Gordon was high scorer for his team although Metcalf of the New Hampshire Freshmen led him by one free throw. The summary:
Score: Harvard Freshmen 36, N. H. State Freshmen 33. Goals from floor: Gordon 5, Stevens, D. H., 4, Seymour 4, Metcalf 4, Sipp 3, Black, Rudofsky, Anderson, Fernand Ryan. Free throws: Gordon 8, Metcalf 11. Referee, Hoyt, Time, 20-minute periods.
