Robert F. Herrick '90 will act as advisory coach of the University crew this spring, not as head coach, as was stated in a Boston newspaper yesterday, Major F. W. Moore '93, Graduate Treasurer of the Athletic Association, announced yesterday. The schedule of races as published was also inaccurate, since the only races of which the dates are settled, those with Yale and Cornell, have not yet been approved by the Athletic Committee.
Major Moore gave out the following statement yesterday:
"Subject to the approval of the Athletic Committee, Robert F. Herrick '90, will act as Chairman of the Rowing Committee and advisory coach of the crews for the coming season.
"At the time Mr. F. L. Higginson Jr. '00 accepted the position of Chairman of the Committee, it was with the understanding that if his business affairs would not give him sufficient time to keep in touch with the rowing here, Mr. Herrick would undertake the work of Chairman and advisor. It is hoped that Mr. Herrick will be able to keep in close touch with the crews during the season, but he does not expect to do much, if any, active coaching.
"The crew schedule has not been completed, and the only dates definitely settled at present are those with Yale on June 24 at New London, and with Cornell on May 28 on the Charles. The crew management is negotiating for two-mile races with Princeton, the Naval Academy, and Technology, but no agreement has been reached as to the dates. The schedule has therefore not been submitted to the Athletic Committee for its approval and is wholly tentative."
The Advisory Committee is made up of R. F. Herrick '90, F. L. Higginson Jr. '00, E. C. Storrow '87, Leverett Saltonstall '14, H. B. Cabot '17 and Wendell Davis '21.
Was Head Coach in 1916
Mr. Herrick served as head coach in 1916, when he developed the University crew which defeated Yale and covered the Thames course in the record time of 20 minutes and 2 seconds. Two years previous, in 1914, he coached the second crew so that it captured the classic grand challenge cup at the English Henley. At different times he has coached the Union Boat Club crews, going abroad with them for the last English Henley.
Mr. Herrick is at present head of a law firm in Boston, but he expects to retire from active participation in the business of the organization within a few weeks. This will give him opportunity to spend as much time as he desires at Cambridge. William Haines will continue as head coach and there will be little difference in his duties.
