The University debating teams held their first debates Saturday evening. The affirmative team, composed of 1, S. A. Rosenblatt '22; 2, H. J. Friendly '23; 3, C. W. Phelps '22 (captain) met Bates at Lewiston, Me., and were defeated.
The negative Crimson team met a similar fate at the hands of Colgate at Hamilton, N. Y. The Harvard team was as follows: 1, W. H. Hardy '22; 2, H. J. Starr '21; 3, P. G. Fanning unC.
The subject of the debate was, "Resolved: That the government should own and operate the coal mines of the United States."
Both University teams made a good showing in spite of the final outcome. The lack of a permanent coach since the war was greatly felt, and the fact that both teams were away from home was also a handicap.
