There is a pressing need for a large number of volunteers for social service work at the present time. Two thousand University men could readily be employed in its different branches, while only 220 are actually engaged in this work. Doubtless there are many not included in this number who are individually active along these lines, but it is a fair estimate of those recorded as working with organizations.
The actual requests for volunteer aid in the hands of the social service secretary at Phillips Brooks House number 100:--30 for boys' clubs meeting in the evenings during the week-- 10 for visiting through the Associated Charities of Boston; 15 for afternoon work with young boys meeting from 4 to 5; and 45 for miscellaneous positions. Men of ability to entertain, whether musically or otherwise, are especially needed.
The Massachusetts General Hospital has applied for 30 helpers. Some for secretarial work in the out-patient department; others in the Medical Department for general supervision and personal attention, such as reading to patients. Besides these, men are wanted for photographic work, which offers good experience and, contact with many doctors.
