Contrary to announcements in the Boston papers last evening, Dr. Charles Whelan, Supervisor of Track Athletics and Instructor in the Department of Hygiene, has not officially resigned from his position. He has, however, sent in his resignation, but it has not as yet been accepted by the Athletic Committee.
Dr. Whelan was appointed last March to take general charge of the track work, especially the organizing and developing of the Freshmen, although "Pooch" Donovan was still retained as the regular coach. While here Dr. Whelan introduced many innovations, such as practicing before mirrors and studying slow speed motion pictures of national stars in action. He also assisted in the actual coaching work.
It had been hoped that such a system an was planned, with Dr. Whelan at the head, would bring about a new era in track which has since the war been the weakest of the major sport teams in the University, and through his organization ability the team has improved to a great extent.
Before coming to Harvard Dr. Whelan had a very exceptional record as an athletic instructor at both the Volkmann School and Tufts College. When at the former institution he turned out several championship teams in track. Final announcement concerning his resignation will probably be made Friday morning.
