UNIVERSITY AND 1923 EIGHTS ENTRAIN FOR NEW LONDON AT 1.05

Thirty-one members of the University and Freshman crew squads leave this afternoon at 1.05 for Red Top, where they will start their intensive training in preparation for the Yale races on June 25. Besides the oarsmen, Coaches William Haines, Burt Haines and Dr. Paul Withington and Manager A. Houghton '21, Assistant Manager E. E. Long '21, Freshman Manager S. Logan and Assistant Freshman Manager J. C. Newcomb will go down. The two launches have already been sent and the shells were shipped last night so that the crews will be able to use them this afternoon in practice.

H. Brown '22 Out for a Few Days

The University eights had their last workout on the Charles yesterday afternoon, when the first and second crews had a two and one-half mile brush, the former winning by four lengths after they had given the scrubs a two-length handicap. There was a slight shift in the second boat because H. Brown was unable to row on account of a slightly sprained back. S. A. Duncan '22 went from 6 to stroke and D. H. Morris '21 took his place. Soon after their arrival at Red Top this afternoon the eights will get on the water for a short spin. While in their training quarters practice will be held regularly twice a day.

The average weight of the first eight is about 179, four pounds heavier than last year's crew. Captain Wendall Davis '21, M. E. Olmsted '21, D. H. Morris '21 and E. L. Peirson '21 are the veterans of last year's race, while R. K. Kane '22, L. B. McCagg '22 and L. Terry '22 were on the 1922 Freshman eight. R. Jenney '21 and F. B. Lothrop '21 were members of the second crew last spring. No definite seating of the Eli eights has been announced as yet and there is a possibility of a shake up, although it is late in the season.

Both Colleges Unsuccessful So Far

The Crimson first crew has so far had an unsuccessful season, having been defeated in turn by Annapolis, Princeton and Cornell, while the Blue outrowed the Columbia and Pennsylvania eights but received a severe setback at the hands of Cornell and Princeton. Shifts have been made in the seating of the crews of both colleges since these races and the strength and speed of the University and Yale combinations have been improved. Both Freshman crews have also been badly beaten by the Princeton and Cornell yearlings.
