MEDICAL SCHOOL BENEFITS BY ROCKEFELLER BEQUEST

97 OTHER INSTITUTIONS AIDED

An appropriation of $650,000 for improvements in the Medical School has been announced by the General Education Board and the Rockefeller Foundation. This sum is to be divided between two departments of the school as follows: for improved facilities in obstetrics, $300,000, and for the development of teaching phychiatry, $350,000.

The gift is a portion of a $20,261,900 appropriation just divided among 98 of approximately 250 institutions which recently applied for aid. A large part of this is to be used for a salary raise among the instructors, and is presented on the condition that the schools themselves will reach their self-established goals.

In making this appropriation the trustees announce that "a careful statistical inquiry shows that in order to raise the level of salaries to a degree somewhat commensurate with increased cost-of living, their endowment funds would have to be increased by from $150,000,000 to $200,000,000.

"It is evident that to accomplish this result the $50,000,000 in the hands of the board will have to be supplemented by funds from other sources, in the ratio of two or three to one. This has been kept in mind in making appropriations which have been made contingent upon the raising of additional amounts."
