CREW "A" COVERS TWO MILES IN FAST TIME

RED TOP, CONN., June 18.--This morning the first and second University eights held a time trial over the two-mile course. Conditions were very favorable, as there was a strong ebb tide and a northeast wind which quartered the downstream course. The shells were lined up in front of the Red Top boathouse and were started by Coach Haines. They rowed very nearly even during the whole distance, but in the last eighth mile the first crew gave a remarkable exhibition of driving ability. The eights had been rowing at about 29 strokes to the minute, practically even, and in this last stretch the first boat did not raise the number of strokes, but by putting on extra drive at the finish, put three lengths between it and the second, crossing the finish line 9 minutes and 45 seconds after the start. Crew B covered the course in 10 minutes exactly. This compares very favorably with the time made by the Yale crews under similar conditions and over the same distance, when the fastest time clocked was 10 minutes and 15 seconds.

In the afternoon all three crews went for the regular workout downstream. Kane resumed his position at 3 in the first boat, which allowed Damon to return to bow on B, while Duncan is again rowing at 6 in the second boat. Borland and Morris are again on the substitutes' bench.

Another race has been scheduled as part of the regatta, that between the combination eights of the two Universities. These will be composed of four Freshmen and four upperclassmen. For the University, the four substitutes now at Red Top, C. K. Cummings, Jr. '23, E. Perkins '23, D. H. Morris, Jr. '21, and J. N. Borland 2nd '21, and D. Withington' '22, D. B. Hull '20, R. F. Bradford '23, and L. W. Rathbun '23, will row, although the definite seating has not yet been announced. The four men last named will go down to Red Top on Wednesday, June 23, to prepare for the race on the following day.

Before the regular afternoon practice a mixed eight of informal oarsmen took the water chiefly for exercise, much to the amusement of the applauding crew men. The oarsmen in this boat performed very well, but a great deal of puffing was observed on their return.
