NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

(From one who was at Harvard with him.)

Who thinks of Alan Seeger now?

Just you and I and one or two

Who love the drifting dreamy days

That spring brings back both fair and blue.

A few to whom a dream is real,

That look beyond the trail of Life

And see above the May-time clouds

A haven free from storm and strife.

The dull world takes it way once more

Along the paths of greed and gain;

Remembering not the sacrifice,

Forgetting all the blood and pain

Of those who left Home, Youth and Love,

And made the offering supreme

That men might safely carry on

And lovers rove the Fields of Dream.

Yes, men forget; but there are those

Who love brave life and young romance;

Whose heartstrings vibrate at the thought

Of those who died for Right--and France.

And now, when apple blossoms bloom

And balm of springtime fills the air,

We think of him who led the way

And died at Belloy-en-Santerre.
