8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
In the race held Saturday between the first and second University crews and the Union Boat Club crew over the mile course in the basin, the second crew rowed home to victory in five minutes and sixteen seconds, half a length ahead of the first crew and a length and a half in the lead of the Boat Club. Although it was originally planned to hold the race over the mile and seven-eighths course from Cottage Farm Bridge to the Union Boat House, the high wind and rough water made this impossible. The second boat got away to a good start with a stroke of about thirty-four which gave it its lead over the University at the 300 yard mark; then both the Harvard crews settled down to about thirty, while the Union's stroke was one or two points below. They were handicapped by a lack of training, as they have not been out on the water as long as the University crews. The finish line was passed first by the second crew, half a length ahead of the first, and then by the University, who led the Unions by a little over a length.
The line-ups of the three crews were as follows:
University A: Bow, Davis; 2, Kane; 3, Terry; 4, Duncan; 5, Davis; 6, McCagg; 7, Pond; Stroke, Jenney; Coxswain, Peirson.
University B: Bow, Atkinson; 2, C. F. Bathelder; 3, Appleton; 4, Lothrop; 5, Burden; 6, Morris; 7, Damon; Stroke, Olmsted; Coxswain, Williams.
Union Boat Club: Bow, Murray; 2, White; 3, Coolidge; 4, Whitman; 5, P. Parkman; 6, H. Parkman; 7, Jeffries; Stroke, Lund; Coxswain, Reynders.
