Four years ago basketball was dropped from the number of minor sports at Harvard, principally because the facilities in the Hemenway Gymnasium were so inadequate. Since 1915 basketball in other colleges has risen to a place of great popularity, and at several institutions has been made a major sport.
With the inauguration here of the new physical training department, informal basketball has been encouraged, and several very successful teams have been developed. Added to this, a new basketball floor and other reorganization in the Hemenway Gymnasium have made the facilities for play much more adequate.
As a result of this new interest in the game the Student Council has re-established basketball as a minor sport. It certainly deserves such a place in athletics at Harvard, and the action of the Student Council is propitious.
