Another issue of deep moment is about to come before the representatives of the voters, both men and women, of America; Congress is to be asked to appropriate fifty million dollars for use in bringing home the remains of American dead from the battlefields of France. The question is one over which difference of opinion exists; and it is a subject too near the hearts of some for ruthless discussion.
Though many people would like to see their soldiers, who "went West" fighting in France, brought back for interment in their native land, the feeling preponderates that those who died would prefer to be left with their comrades buried on the field of honor. In this case the few will have to sacrifice their personal desire to the sentiment of the majority.
The regrettable part of the proceeding is that corruption is charged in connection with the bill. Fifty millions is no mean sum. Are even the dead to be pursued by the lust which has swept our politics?
"Ambition shall not mock the boast
Of heroes dead along the Marne!
For happiness has offered most-
They sleep in peace, who crossed the Marne!"
