For the Phi Beta Kappa Day exercises on June 21, the Honorable Thomas Nelson Page has been secured as Orator and Professor Charles Hall Grandgent '83 of the French Department as Poet, it was announced yesterday by the Secretary.
Mr. Page has had a notable literary and diplomatic career. After studying at Washington and Lee University, he devoted himself to authorship, writing such well known books as "Marse Chan," "Two Little Confederates," "Bred in the Bone," and "Thomas Jefferson, the Apostle of Liberty." In 1913 he was appointed by President Wilson to the post of United States Ambassador to Italy, which he occupied with distinction until his resignation a few weeks ago.
Professor Grandgent was graduated from the University in the class of 1883, summa cum laude. For the next three years he attended the Graduate School. Since 1896 he has been Professor of Romance Languages at the University.
