William W. Roper, coach of the Princeton University football team has stated that he is opposed to the plan of regulating the length of football games by plays instead of time, as proposed by H. R. Coffin '94. Coffin advocates limiting a period to a certain number of plays instead of a certain number of minutes.
"It is hard enough to keep the time straight, and to keep plays would require a whole book-keeping force on the field," said Roper. "As to limiting the system of stalling for time, the same objectionable feature would be presented. A team with a slight lead and the ball and say four more plays, would simply take the four downs and the game would be over. The other side would not have any more chance than it has under the time system."
