GENERAL NIVELLE

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harvard University bears on its records the name of many famous and honored visitors, but few of them can outshine the new name which is to be added today--that of Robert Georges Nivelle. So long as the story of Verdun is told will its defender be remembered as one of the great generals of the war; his defense of the city was not merely a strategic victory in itself--it shattered the German morale, and brought relief and encouragement to the forces of the Allies fighting against despair and doubt.

Nor is personal admiration any less strong than the sense of the honor accorded, the University by the General's visit. The short, significant words, "They shall not pass," gained for him the esteem of civilized peoples the world over, and raised him to the ranks of the heroes. As a hero will he be received today.
