F. W. Galbraith, National Commander of the American Legion, in a speech at Philadelphia last week, pointed out that Americanization work among the immigrants is one of the most important functions of the Legion. "We asked permission," he said, "to send representatives of the Legion to talk to the immigrants before they left Ellis Island. Assistant Secretary of Labor Post, for reasons best known to himself, refused to allow us to do this, but we must see to it that America ceases to be the melting pot of nations and becomes one united nation."

The Massachusetts State Committee has seen that the work is particularly necessary in this state where one third of the population is foreign born or of foreign parentage. Accordingly it is sending speakers from various Legion posts to tell the unnaturalized the advantages of citizenship and explain the process of becoming American citizens. Besides this work the Committee is planning to furnish leaders for educational classes in cities where population is largely foreign.

The Committee is extremely desirous that the members of the Shannon Post enlist their services. College men who can be introduced by the name of Harvard are especially effective in this work. It is hoped that in the near future a series of lectures can be given to the volunteer speakers by men eminent in this field which will explain the methods of the undertaking. The Shannon Post wishes to obtain the names of any men, whether they belong to this Post or not, who are interested in doing such work. Little time is asked from each man and his expenses will be paid. From an individual point of view, this is a great opportunity to come into personal contact with these foreigners, whom many college men will have to understand when, as graduates and business men, they become employers.
