FIRST-CLASS MATERIAL ASSURES SUCCESS IN HOCKEY

The hockey season this winter gives every promise of being as successful as that of last year.

With all of the letter men back, except J. S. Stubbs '20, Captain N. S. Walker '20 and T. M. Avery '21, Coach W. H. Claflin Jr. '15, last year's coach, and again at the helm this winter, will have an abundance of proven material with which to develop a team to retain possession of the Intercollegiate Hockey Title which was won by the University last year. He will be aided from time to time by Coach A. Winsor '02, the father of the "Harvard Hockey System," and to hockey what Haughton has been for football.

The position of goal will be well taken care of by J. Holmes '21, who has won his letter the last two years, or by C. S. Stillman '21, a player of exceptional ability, at St. Mark's and on his Freshman team, who was kept from playing last winter on account of illness.

In R. W. Emmons ocC., C. W. Baker '22 and J. Gaston '22, all "H" men, Coach Claflin will have three extremely fast and heady players from which to choose his right wing. For the left wing there will be F. McN. Bacon '21 and D. Angler '22. R. W. Buntin '21, J. M. Martin '22 and H. B. W. Snelling '21 will have a likely struggle for the position of left center; Captain E. L. Bigelow can be expected to lead the attack from his place at right center. For the defense, the squad will be materially strengthened by the addition of G. Owen '23, captain and individual star of last year's Freshman team, and R. S. Humphrey '21, who was unable to play last winter. From the Freshman seven, J. H. Dempsey on the defense, and D. F. Thayer, J. Larocque Jr. and R. Watts in the forward line, and J. G. Flint at goal, are well above the average.

Last Year Unqualified Success

Last year's season was a vindication of the Harvard system. Although beaten in two early season games on account of lack of practice, the team succeeded in defeating both Yale and Princeton, as well as the Boston All Stars, who later played Pittsburg to determine which team should go to the Olympic Games, Dartmouth, and the Sherbrooke Hockey Club of Canada. Besides this enviable record, the team was uniformly victorious in its many practice games with strong teams in and around Boston.

Although the schedule for this season has not been entirely completed, it will contain the usual two out of three series with Yale and Princeton, a game with Williams, and probably a game with one or two of the better Canadian clubs. In the days of the old Arena, Queens McGill and Toronto have faced the University and the custom will be revived.

All of the University games will be held in the new Boston Arena, on the site of the old structure on St. Botolph street, which will be completed about December 15. The second and Freshman teams will practice and play their games on the Charlesbank Rinks, the number of which will be increased to five this year.

The season will start on Wednesday, December 8, and at this time all candidates for the teams as well as for the two managerial competitions will be called out.
