Coach W. J. Bingham '16 stated yesterday that his plans for this fall included, aside from the regular cross-country meets, a Freshman Inter-Dormitory meet, and either a handicap meet for all track candidates or a meet in Boston for the University team. These meets will be for the purpose of accustoming the new men to competition, and for instruction in the correct method of running races.
As soon as the weather becomes too cold for out of door practice Coach Bingham will put the candidates through daily work in the cage. This exercise will keep the team in condition and sustain the interest in track.
Winter Track After Christmas
Directly after the Christmas recess winter track will commence on the board track at Soldiers Field. All field event candidates will practice in the baseball cage.
Coach Bingham expects that in all probability the University team will take part in a triangular meet with Dartmouth and Cornell in Boston, as was done last year. A new feature that it is hoped may be carried out is a spring trip for the University team during the spring vacation.
Fall Practice Very Important
The point which Coach Bingham particularly stressed is the importance of the fall practice. In previous years the men have reported for track after Christmas entirely unknown to the coaches and entirely out of condition, so that it was necessary to pick a team in two or three weeks from raw, untrained and unknown material. It is in order to avoid this necessity that fall track is being conducted this year.
Men who have done any, or intend to do any distance work should report for cross-country this fall. If they have no interest in cross-country they should report in spite of that fact, so as to get in condition before Christmas.
As "Pooch" Donovan is unable to coach track this fall on account of his football activities, Coach Bingham has appointed Farrell, last year's cross-country coach, to take charge of all track activities. Dr. W. T. McCarty has been appointed coach of the harriers.
