F. S. MEAD APPOINTED UNIVERSITY COMPTROLLER

Frederick S. Mead '87, has been appointed Comptroller of Harvard University in place of Francis W. Hunnewell '02, who has resigned from this position in order to give his full time to his duties as Secretary to the Corporation.

Mr. Mead, as Comptroller, is to have general supervision of the expenditure of University money. Hitherto this duty has been combined with that of one of the two Secretaries to the Corporation. But it has been felt that with the growth of the University it would be well to separate these offices and thus to have one official giving the major part of his time to the administration of the University budget, in order that every opportunity for effective economics might be seized. Hence the appointment of Mr. Mead, which takes effect on November first. Mr. Hunnewell will continue as Secretary to the Corporation.

In Charge of War Records

Mr. Mead has been serving recently as editor of the Harvard Alumni Directory and has been in charge of the Harvard War Records Office. He has been asked to go on with his work in connection with the War Records, and it is understood that this will be completed next spring. He will remain throughout this year in his office at the Harvard Union.

Under the new arrangement, the Treasurer of the University, Charles F. Adams '86, will continue to have charge of the investment of the funds of the University, a task which has grown to immense proportions of recent years, especially since the Harvard Endowment Fund Campaign has increased the invested property of the University to over forty millions. The Comptroller, Mr. Mead, will be in a sense the business manager. He will be responsible for the use of University funds, and will pass upon the budgets of the various University offices and departments.
